Bisignano Named CEO of IRS

Commissioner Frank Bisignano, the head of the Social Security Administration ("SSA"), was named the Chief Executive Office of the IRS earlier this month. Look, Commissioner Bisignano has been a much more effective and stable leader compared to former Commissioner Leland Dudek.  Dudek seemed to thrive off drama and chaos as evidenced by the multitude of poorly written press releases that he issued during his brief stint as a Commissioner. It was honestly like watching the SSA be run by a reality show character from the "Real Housewives" series. I kept expected Dudek to throw wine at someone's face as is customary on this campy TV franchise.

Coming from the financial world, it makes sense that Commissioner Bisignano has a more cool and collected approach to governing. Financial markets do not exactly thrive during periods of uncertainty. Nerves and anxiety usually cause the market to plummet.

I admit it.....I like Commissioner Bisignano. He deserves applause for calming down all the negative rhetoric that surrounded SSA for the first five months of 2025. I also have seen improvement in service at SSA since he took over. However, I do not see how one man can run both the SSA and the IRS effectively. They are both very important jobs, not the type of positions that can be performed on a part-time basis.

I do not see why the top dog at SSA should have a side hustle. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE a good side hustle. I often consult on the side if my schedule allows for it. I hate idle time and I intend to use every single minute of my day efficiently. I fault no one for having a strong work ethic.  However, I am also not the leader of the largest beneficiary program in our nation.

Personally, I don't think any person, even the clearly talented Commissioner Bisignano, can realistically run two major Federal programs.  I doubt Commissioner Bisignano has any free time in his schedule to take on an even less demanding side hustle, like driving for Uber of Lyft.  I kid...I kid, but this truly seems like an odd development to me. I hope Commissioner Bisignano does not get pulled in so many directions that he ends up not being able to make SSA into the streamlined and technologically advanced beast that he promised us when he took up SSA's helm. Time will tell, but this seems like recipe for burnout.
